Statement of Intent V04

In the age of Internet of Things, objects are at a point in time where their ability transcends the given purpose. These apparatuses have evolved into new species that co-exists in the human ecology. However, the sales-driven industry narrows its evolution toward a similar path. Corporations repeatedly promote trivial improvements for similar functions, which defer its advancement to favor human interests and profits. Technology is represented through an altered channel to consumers but I choose to believe “Innovations won’t emerge unless we move away from commercialism.”(1) If human-centered design is considered harmful (2), I believe this is indeed the reason to a flood of identical designs. This research is my attempt to investigate reciprocal and complementary design philosophies to human-centered design. Moreover, to invert the idea of a business-driven functions by repositioning its social orientation, discovering alternative purposes in order to create a broaden biodiversity in the world of consumer electronics.

Most consumer electronics have the same function and purpose as they were first invented. The development remains unchanged. Examining the spectrum of this ecosystem leads me to ask questions like: “If consumer electronics move away from commercialism as their driving force, what other directions can we speculate in the future?”, “What new directions in design can we discover by inverting human-centered design?”, “What is in between the boundaries of human-centered design and device-centered design?”, “What are the fundamental differences between human-centered design and non-human-centered design?“, “What metamorphosis of human behavior will generate alternative uses for consumer electronics?”.

Coming from a background of GUI, UI, IA and UX design in the field of consumer electronics, I am obsessed with new electronics, gadgets, mobile appliances, their applications and interfaces. It further heightens my interests in the relationship and emotions between human and consumer electronics, the orientation of consumer electronics in human society, human-computer interaction and behavior changes influenced by affordances.
